Getting Started with Languages
Important
This is only applicable for On-Premise deployments.
Follow these quick steps to get started with the Languages extension.
- Adding Language Packs
- Editing Translations
Languages
The Languages section on the left side of the extension will list (in alphabetical order) all of the various language packs that are currently installed on your Appspace server instance. You also have the ability to add, remove, as well as export language packs in this section. Upon selecting one of the languages, you will be presented with additional information on the two sub-tabs in the main area of the extension.
Overview
The Overview sub-tab will present a summary of all Appspace system components (mainly extensions) and their current translation states for the selected language. Translations states for each language dictionary can be:
- Full - Every phrase has been completely translated.
- Partial - Some phrases are complete, and other phrases may be blank.
- None - None of the phrases have been translated.
Translation
The Translations sub-tab presents the administrator with the actual translation dictionary entries for the selected language. The original key words/terms are listed under the Source column and the translated terms (or blank if untranslated) appearing under the Translation column. Administrators can additionally sort/filter the translation dictionary by using the Module drop-down menu to only display the translations for specific system components or extensions.
Section 1: Adding Language Packs
All Appspace instances will have various language packs already pre-installed on the server. The language that you wish to translate may or may not be one of these default packages already listed. The following are the steps to adding additional language dictionaries into your system to use for translation.
From within the Languages extension, click the Add New Language button.
On the Add New Language pop-up window, select the desired language pack to be added from the drop-down menu. Click Add to continue.
Note
The upload process may take some time, depending on the extension’s file size and speed of the network connection between the local machine and the Appspace instance.
The page will update to reflect the newly added language pack in the list of installed languages. The Overview sub-tab displays the status of translations for this language, with the Translation column indicating None for all extension modules. You can now proceed to the next step and begin working in the Translation tab to add translations to this language pack.
Section 2: Editing Translations
Most language pack dictionaries will not have the translations completed after they have been added to the system. It will be up to each organization to go through the necessary/applicable extension(s) to define the terms that require translation.
Begin by selecting the desired language to be edited. Click the Translation sub-tab to access the list of phrases that require translation for that language. Take note of the current module (extension) that you will be editing the translations for. You may choose to switch to a different module to edit the phrases for that extension.
Hint
Alternatively, you may also click the link of a specific module under the Overview column (on the Overview sub-tab) to directly access the phrases to be translated for that particular module.
Click on the phrase to be added/edited under the Translation column, and enter the translation accordingly. You may edit as many source phrases as you would like at one time. Once you have edited the desired phrases with their translations, you should notice the Apply button to reflect the total number of pending changes. Click the Apply X Change(s) button to continue.
The list of edited phrases will be displayed, indicated by the Old Translation and New Translation columns, respectively (a blank entry means that no previous translations were available). You may also selectively undo any of the pending changes by clicking the X button in any row. Click on the Confirm X Change(s) button to finalize the translations and save the changes to the language pack.
Note
You may have to log out and log back into your Appspace instance to see the extension reappear in the proper order in the extension stack drop-down menu.
Recap
You should now be familiar with the Languages extension and be able to:
- Add additional language packs
- Edit and customize language translations
